Failed to Read the File Record, There Are Some Physical Bad Clusters on the Disk.

This cursory guide explains how to fix Busybox Initramfs error on Ubuntu Linux. I use Ubuntu 20.04 LTS as my daily commuter on my Dell Inspiron laptop. Today I turned it on and the boot process dropped to the BusyBox shell and I ended up at the initramfs prompt.

Every bit far as I can remember, I did nothing wrong. I didn't forcibly ability off it. It was working merely fine yesterday! When I switched information technology on today, I landed in the BusyBox shell:

BusyBox v1.xxx.i (Ubuntu 1:1.30.one-4ubuntu6.ane) built-in vanquish (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of congenital-in commands. (initramfs)

I can't get by this screen. Too it doesn't evidence what exactly the problem is. All I see is only a blank busybox vanquish.

I wasn't certain what to do at this point. So I simply passed the go out command to come across what happens.

And so I saw the actual error:

(initramfs) go out /dev/sda1 contains a file system with errors, check forced. Inode 4326476 extent tree (at level i) could be narrower, IGNORED. /dev/sda1: Inode 4326843 extent tree (at level 1) could be narrower, IGNORED. /dev/sda1: Inode 4327012 extent tree (at level ane) could be narrower, IGNORED. /dev/sda1: Inode 4329004 extent tree (at level 1) could be narrower, IGNORED. /dev/sda1: Inodes that were office of a corrupted orphan linked list establish. /dev/sda1: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY. (i.e., without -a or -p options) fsck exited with condition code iv. The root filesystem on /dev/sda1 requires a manual fsck. Busybox Initramfs Fault On Ubuntu

Every bit yous can see in the above output, the /dev/sda1 partition is corrupted. The file system in this partition has some errors. If you ever encountered with this type of problem, you need to bank check and repair the problematic Linux filesystems with fsck command.

Please annotation that sometimes yous don't see whatsoever errors subsequently typing the exit command. In that case, try to run fsck on all filesystems.

For those wondering, BusyBox is software suite that provides many common UNIX utilities into a single pocket-size executable. It provides replacements for well-nigh of the utilities you lot unremarkably find in GNU fileutils, shellutils, etc.

Initramfs is an initial ram file organization based on tmpfs. It contains the tools and scripts required to mountain the file systems earlier the init binary on the real root file system is chosen.

Fix Busybox Initramfs Fault On Ubuntu Linux

i. To solve initramfs fault on Ubuntu Linux, you need to repair the filesystem in the corrupted sectionalisation using fsck command like below:

(initramfs) fsck /dev/sda1 -y

Supplant /dev/sda1 with your segmentation name. In your arrangement, information technology could be /dev/sdb1, /dev/sdc1 etc. Yous can use true cat /proc/partitions or blkid commands to get your Linux division details in Busybox.

2. Now the fsck command will start to fix all bad blocks automatically in the filesystem.

Later a couple minutes, you will see an output like below:

          /dev/sda1: ***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***** /dev/sda1: 497733/30531584 files (ane.5% not-contiguous), ........

iii. Next, type reboot and striking ENTER to restart your arrangement!

(initramfs) reboot

If the reboot command doesn't work, type leave and hit ENTER.

Cantankerous your fingers and look for the system to reboot! If all went well, your organisation will kicking commonly without any problem.

These steps helped me and many others (see the comment section below) to solve Busybox Initramfs mistake on Ubuntu Linux operating arrangement. If you are stuck in initramfs prompt, this guide will definitely assist.

Heads Up: If you keep getting this error frequently, probably your hard disk is getting weaker. In that case, it is recommended to backup the data and supercede the hd as soon as possible.

If your Ubuntu organisation is crashed due to power failure or network connectivity event in the center of the upgrade process, you lot might end upward with broken Ubuntu. In that instance, yous can easily set cleaved Ubuntu without reinstalling it as described in the following guide.

When this type of problem occurs, the sensible approach is to kicking the system from a rescue CD/DVD/USB-retentivity stick with the same GNU/Linux distribution version and so beginning check hardware (dmesg shows for case whether difficult disks are operational or producing failing letters) and then if they are properly operation to fsck -CfV all of the [unmounted] file arrangement partitions. If that does not fix the kicking up problem, then it is possible from the rescue booted system to practise further repairs and even to reinstall any essential corrupted software.
